Entrance to the Kennedy Bunker, Peanut Island, Palm Beach, Florida.
In 1962 the Navy Seabees constructed this bunker as a fallout shelter for the use of JFK in case of a Nuclear attack while Kennedy was at the "Winter White House" in Palm Beach. As it was impossible to build a shelter in secret in Palm Beach, the shelter was constructed on a small island in the Lake Worth Inlet to the Port of Palm Beach, home of the USCG rescue station.
Entrance open. Note closable air vent on the left.
Main room showing bunks, communication center, door to right is to the lavatory, cylinder in view is primitive "porta potty".
Main chamber looking towards entrance, Presidential "office" on the right.
Communications center
Rear exit added when bunker was de-activated. Originally this would have been buried under fill dirt.
Exterior view of shelter, exhaust vent.
